Space Rocks for Katrina

I haven't posted for a while, mostly due to a deadline. But also due to the situation in the Gulf. Tragedies of that magnitude seem to reduce almost everything else -- including writing about gems -- to absurdity, at least for a while. But tonight I feel fortunate to be able to combine sending aid to Katrina with an appreciation of rocks.

Geoff Notkin, the artist /photographer/ designer who designed my website, is also a hunter and collector of meteorites. He's used his contacts in the international meteorite community to put together a raffle of donated space rocks and meteorite-related items. All proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the American Red Cross to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Among the prizes are a guided meteorite hunting expedition, rare and wonderful books on the space rocks and, of course, many fabulous specimens.

The tickets are only $10 a piece and they've already raised $5,000.
